[Segtex] Testing segtex

LeRoy,

Thank you for bringing up the installation issue. We need to develop installation instructions for different platforms and setups before the package is publicly released. Please record your experiences.

To answer your question:

There is a way to tell tetex to look into a different directory for additional files. For example, if you install SEG's texmf into ~/seg/texmf/ , you can set the environmental variable TEXMF to

'{$HOME/seg/texmf,\!\!$TEXMFMAIN}'

to tell tetex to look for files under both the default texmf directory and the new directory.

If you have write access to the main texmf directory, it should be safe to unpack everything there (as long as you keep a backup and avoid name conflicts). Remember to run "texhash" after you install new files under either of the texmf directories.

Sergey,
Really, installation advice.
I downloaded texmf-11-16-04 from your server and installed it in my home
directory, which does not seem to be the most integrated thing to do. I
did get a version of my latex ms to work this way, but it seems clumsy.

I am running (on a sparc) tetex-1.01, whose main subdirectory is texmf.
Is your root tarball's texmf designed to be unpacked into my existing
/usr/local/tetex-2.0.2/texmf? and is it prudent for me to install it this way?

Or should I keep the SEG-specific files out of my base distribution?

Thanks for any advice.
